Cypress Creek Renewables to Build 80 MW Solar Plant in Yakima County

Yakima County is set to see a new 80 MW solar facility, the Ostrea Solar Plant once construction begins next Monday. Located in the northeast of the county, Washington, the facility will have a total of 190,733 solar photovoltaic panels installed. It will cover an area of 811 acres and provide electricity to nearly 30,000 homes. Additionally, the project is being developed by Cypress Creek Renewables, a California-based company. The projects will be served by Bonneville Power Administration’s Moxee-to-Midway 115 kV transmission line.

More on the Yakima Solar plant

The green light for the project was made in June 2022 following the E2SHB 1812 legislature that was passed to meet the state’s clean energy goals. The legislature made sure that the location and operation of this facility wil produce minimal adverse effects on the environment.

The Goose Prairie Solar Project

Another major project in the area that was also put up by Cypress Creek Renewables is the Goose Prairie Solar project. It is located about 12 miles west of the Ostrea plant and covers 625 acres. What’s more, it is an 80 MW project that broke ground in 2023 and has been generating power since last year. It is fully operational and generated 2,657 MWh of power in December. Furthermore, this amount that more than doubled to 5,878 MWh in January.

There are plans to install a battery electric storage system however it is currently in the feasibility stage. Nelson Jia, the asset manager for developer Brookfield Renewable commented the following. “Our development team is in the feasibility stage of potentially exploring the opportunity to install a battery energy storage system at the site as well to complement the solar.”
