Design plans for the proposed Powerhouse Museums refurbishment project in Australia have been unveiled. 

The design was carried out by renowned fashion designer, Akira Isogawa‘s designs which was selected unanimously from a list of five architectural firms. The firms in the list icluded the Durbach Block Jaggers Architects, Youssofzay + Hart, Architects, Arup, and lastly, Finding Infinity.

The project’s design draws inspiration from the cultural topography of the region.

An overview of the Powerhouse Museums refurbishment design plans

According to the plans the development will feature a rooftop garden, and a new public plaza. Additionally, it will also feature a multi-story annex running the length of Harris street, right across the bare forefront.

The main entrance to the Powerhouse Museum will be built facing Chinatown and Darling Harbour. A huge public square that features native species will be near the brand-new entrance. An event area for museum programs will also be near the entrance.

Furthermore, the 1988-built arched atrium extension within the museum will be demolished. The post office, better known as the Warn Building will also be taken down. Thereafter, a four-story structure will be constructed in its place.

The structure will serve convenient access to a library as well as archives from the streets. Additionally, the structure will also offer access to the upstairs accommodation for 60 schoolchildren. The accommodation options will include sleeping under the stars in the elegantly designed, rooftop garden.

In total, the entire project cost approximately $500 million.

While speaking about the project, Wendy Lewin the Jury Chair noted that the design approach centers on making subtle moves best appropriate for the museum.
