The winning design for the Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor railway hub in Spain has been revealed by Adif AV. It was submitted by UNStudio, b720 Arquitectura, and engineering company Esteyco.
The international competition was launched by Adif AV in 2020. It was consequently meant to turn the railway hub into a benchmark for multimodal, connected, and sustainable integrated mobility.
A 16-member jury unanimously awarded UNStudio, b720 Arquitectura, and Esteyco’s design proposal the highest possible rating. The jury considered a number of design aspects to convert the complex into an urban reference.
“We are truly thrilled that our design has been nominated as the winning proposal for the Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor railway hub,” said UNStudio founder and principal architect Ben van Berkel.
“Madrid is quickly rising to the top of Europe’s list of most exciting and appealing cities. Thus, this neighborhood’s transformation will revitalise it and give Madrid new green lung space.

Design for the Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor railway hub
The historical vaulted roofs of Chamartín station were taken into consideration by UNStudio, b720 Arquitectura, and Esteyco when creating the proposed design.
They were recognized as a distinctive and distinctive component of the railway hub. Stepped terraces have also been added to the proposal to increase permeability with the nearby city.
To the new parks on either side of the complex, the station creates a permeable extension. It has brand-new towers on both sides and a public square in front.
The other shortlisted teams in the competition are Foster + Partners, BIG, OMA, Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid Architects, RSHP, and Souto de Moura.
