Drydocks World has won a historic contract to design and build the world’s largest Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.

The Dubai-based shipyard, part of DP World, will deliver the project for AMIGO LNG, a joint venture between Epcilon LNG of Texas and LNG Alliance of Singapore. This major deal marks a turning point in offshore LNG development and positions Dubai as a key player in global energy engineering.

Project factsheet: World’s largest floating LNG facility

  • Contract awarded to: Drydocks World, a DP World company.

  • Client: AMIGO LNG (JV between Epcilon LNG and LNG Alliance).

  • Location: Offshore Guaymas, Sonora, on Mexico’s west coast.

  • Project scope: Convert two LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSUs) and build two new FLNG barges.

  • Capacity: Over 4.2 million tonnes per year, the highest for any floating LNG project.

  • Gas supply: From the U.S. Permian Basin, with direct export routes to Asia and Latin America.

  • Completion target: Second half of 2028.

The new offshore plant will include four vessels that together will surpass all existing floating LNG facilities. Using a modular build strategy, the project will focus on precise fabrication, efficient integration, and strict quality control. This method also cuts delivery time, lowers environmental impact, and ensures reliable performance.

Executives from both companies stressed the importance of the development.

Executives from both companies stressed the importance of the development. Rado Antolovic, CEO of Drydocks World, said the project sets new benchmarks for floating LNG solutions while confirming Dubai’s status as a hub for advanced maritime engineering. Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of LNG Alliance, added that the FLNG facility offers faster project schedules, thorough testing, and environmental advantages compared to traditional methods.

Strategic Location and Proven Expertise

The site in Mexico’s Gulf of California for the world’s largest floating LNG facility, provides strategic access to Asian markets. Unlike LNG exports from the U.S. Gulf Coast, which must pass through the Panama Canal, this location offers shorter and cheaper shipping routes. This strengthens Mexico’s position in the global LNG market at a time of rising demand in Asia and Latin America.

With over four decades of shipyard expertise, Drydocks World has completed more than 10 major LNG and floating storage projects. Its Port Rashid yard is one of the largest in the Middle East, giving it the capacity to handle such a complex development.
