Dubai has taken a significant step in tackling its ongoing traffic problems by commencing the procurement process for the Gold Line metro link. The line is a new metro link that is expected to commend the Blue and Red Links. The Gold Line will start at Al-Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai, running parallel to and alleviating pressure on the existing Red Line. The scope of the line also covers inland coverage to the Business Bay and Meydan. Furthermore, it also covers the Global Village and other residential developments in Dubailand. As a first step, the Roads & Transport Authority has issued request for proposals (RFP) to interested firms. The authority seeks to bring on board a lead consultant on the multi-billion-dollar project. Moreover, the authority has noted that the closing date on the RFP is set for May. Its scope on the lead consultancy role is similar to that of the ongoing Blue Line project.

Consultancy procurement of the Gold Line metro link follows on from the award of the construction contract for the Blue Line end of last year. Furthermore, it reflects the growing congestion on Dubai and the rising popularity of the metro. The Blue Line is a counterpart of the procured line that is still under construction. Last year, RTA awarded a $5.5 billion main contract for the construction of the Blue Line. Once completed, the Blue Line will connect the existing Red and Green lines. Furthermore, it will be 30 kilometers long, 15.5 kilometers underground and 14.5 kilometers above ground.
