Port Arthur will host one of Southeast Texas’ largest new power facilities after the state regulators approved Entergy Texas’ plan to build the Legend Power Station, a natural gas facility aimed at meeting quickly growing electricity needs.
The $1.6 billion plant will be capable of powering more than 190,000 homes when it is up and running. The project is expected to generate about $1.79 billion of local economic activity and create thousands of local jobs. The plant will begin operations by mid-2028.
“We’ve heard directly from our customers and communities about the need for more power to support our rapidly growing region, and this facility will deliver just that,” said Eliecer Viamontes, CEO of Entergy Texas. “Legend Power Station will help us serve families, businesses, schools, and essential services that count on reliable energy every day.”
Legend is part of Entergy Texas’ long-term strategy named STEP Ahead, which seeks to enhance generation capacity, enhance grid reliability, and drive economic development in Southeast Texas. The strategy also includes the Lone Star Power Station at Cleveland and the Orange County Advanced Power Station currently under development.
As Legend Power Station in Port Arthur and other new developments are being built, Entergy Texas foresees adding more than 1.2 gigawatts of new capacity to the grid by 2028—enough to power some of the nation’s fastest-growing communities.
