The Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the Industrial City Solar Power Project (IC Solar) has been awarded.
It has been awarded by QatarEnergy during a special announcement and signing ceremony held in Doha. The leading firm sealed the contract with Samsung Ct&T as the selected contractor for the project’s execution.
This took place in the presence of several officials. These include the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, CEO and President of QatarEnergy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi. Moreover, the CEO of Samsung CT&T Corporation, Sechul Oh was present.
Scope of the contract
The contract covers the engineering, procurement, and construction of two large-scale photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants at the IC. The two solar plants will be built within the Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) and the Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC), respectively.

The Industrial City Solar Power Project (IC Solar) aims to generate renewable and clean energy on a grand scale (875MW). It will thus make use of high-efficiency bifacial modules. The modules will be mounted on single-axis trackers alongside cleaning robots. The cleaning robots will operate on a daily. As a result, they will minimize losses as a result of soiling by moving dust from the PV modules.
The plants are projected to start the production of electricity by the end of 2024.
Significance of the Industrial City Solar Power Project (IC Solar)
The Industrial City Solar Power Project (IC Solar) is a landmark project. It reportedly marks the first investment under the newly owned subsidiary, QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions.
Additionally, the project is a major step toward the implementation of QatarEnergys’ strategy to diversify its resources. This is according to Saad Sherida AL-Kaabi. In addition, AL-Kaabi said that the project will significantly contribute to an increase in the reliance on high-efficiency renewable energy. Furthermore, the CEO noted that QatarEnergy has got a mid-term target. This target is to have 5 GW of power from solar generation by 2035.
The Industrial City Solar Power Project (IC Solar) will, therefore, contribute to this target immensely. At a national level, the project will contribute to Qatar’s renewable energy production capacity from 1.675 GW by 2024.
