The Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority has set aside a total of US$12.2 million to put up a new sewerage system across all districts that are located in Addis Ababa.
Part of the money will be allocated to installing a total of 12 Anaerobic Baffled Reactors (ABR) across eight new condominium sites in Qality, Bole, Kara and Yeka. US$6.4 million has been set aside for the construction of a pipeline across the 10 districts of Addis Abeba. The remaining 82 million Br will be provided for the installation of ABRs in place of existing septic tanks.
The ABRs are in a position to purify over 1000 litres of water per day. The total cost for their installation lies between 3.5 to four million Br each, depending on the type of rock or gravel in the ground.
The authority has already begun installing the first three ABRs at the Qality district, at a 20/80 site in ‘Koya Fucha’. This is the only site that will have five ABR’s while the rest will have one each, due to the large number of condominiums at the site.
Last year, the Authority installed 10 mobile liquid waste treatment plants at seven condominium sites. The deployment cost the authority 759 million Br.
Currently, the city’s almost 3.3 million residents are estimated to discharge 200,000 cubic metres of waste water a day.
