The former location of the Yorkshire Post newspaper offices in the heart of Leeds is set to be redeveloped into a trio tower student housing. Designs for the proposed project have already been submitted and positively received by Leeds City Council’s Plans Panel. DLA Architecture and planning consultant Quod made the design submissions for the project’s developer, Urbanite.

The designs feature a 42-story purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) tower with 1,125 student bedrooms and 18,500 square feet of ancillary space. The second building is set to be 32 stories tall. This building according to the design renderings features a total of 638 student bedrooms and 21,500 square feet of ancillary space.

Both buildings are made up of a combination of studios and apartment units. A total of 348 one, two, and three-bedroom apartments will be made available in the third structure which will be 25 stories tall.

The plans for the student housing at Yorkshire Post newspaper offices’ in Leeds also include a considerable landscaped public realm that extends to almost 62% of the entire site area.  Additionally, the plans also call for the completion of a new public space, Headline Square, and a riverside walk along. The iconic Yorkshire Post tower will be reinvented as a major piece of public art.

Additional features according to the plans include a micro forest which will act as an oasis for biodiversity. At the same time, the first will also provide the benefit of carbon capture and improved air quality. Biophilic structures will also be developed as a part of the site-wide public realm, microclimate, and art strategy.

Furthermore, the proposals also include associated highway infrastructure works to enhance connectivity through and beyond the Yorkshire Post newspaper offices site in Leeds. In preparation for the development of the student housing project, the former Yorkshire Post building on Wellington Street was demolished back in 2014.
