Funds approved for construction of John Davies Town-Zwedru Road, Liberia

Approximately US$ 39.9M was recently approved for the construction of John Davies Town-Zwedru Road in Liberia. The monies were approved by the Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) on December 14, 2023.

This comes following the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund for International Development (OFID)’ US$ 20 million approval. The total funding approved so far for the John Davies Town-Zwedru Road project is approximately US$ 60.92M. This is inclusive of the Government counterpart funding of US$1.02 million.

An overview of the John Davies Town-Zwedru Road project

John Davies Town and Zwedru are in River Gee County and Grand Gedeh County respectively. The towns are about 48.5 kilometres apart.

The road project is a part of the ongoing construction of the Ganta-Harper Road corridor. The latter on the other hand is part of a multinational road project benefiting Liberia and Sierra Leone. To be precise it is under the fourth phase of the Mano River Union Road Construction Facility.

The approval of the funds for the construction of the John Davies Town-Zwedru Road segment completes the financing needed to complete the entire Ganta-Harper Road corridor. In addition to AfDB and OPEC, this corridor is also funded by the World Bank and the European Union.

Minister of Public Works remarks on the approval

Hon. Ruth Coker-Collins thanked President George Manneh Weah for securing full financing of this important and often neglected road corridor. Coker-Collins who is the country’s Minister of Public Works also thanked the president for constructing the road beginning with the Ganta-Tapitta segment.

Furthermore, the minister thanked Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank and the entire Bank for standing with Liberia in its efforts to foster road construction and connectivity. The goal is to ensure economic growth and development in the country as well as regional trade and integration between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
