Gateway Real Estate Africa (GREA), a Mauritius-based African real estate developer, has announced that it will be the primary investor and developer of a new $54-million multi-specialty hospital (the St Helene Artemis Hospital) in Curepipe and a 135-bed cancer facility in Coromandel. Grit Real Estate Income Group, which is listed in London and Mauritius, will co-promote the projects and has the opportunity to invest in both.

The St Helene Artemis Hospital in Curepipe, which began ground in June, will provide a wide range of healthcare services once finished and significant local job creation during the building period and beyond.

According to Gateway CEO and cofounder Greg Pearson, GREA was well-capitalized, having access to a diversified pool of financiers, including listed businesses, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity firms. As a result, this investment is the foundation for developing a one-of-a-kind platform financed by private investors, allowing Mauritius to gradually diversify away from traditional tourism.

Pearson went on to say that healthcare is defensive and robust by nature, adding that “If we further differentiate the offering through specialized, world-class medical treatments, we not only serve the people of Mauritius but will stimulate the economy through further healthcare investments and creating a new kind of medical tourism to the country.”

Falcon Healthcare Group has agreed up an operations and management arrangement with Artemis Medicare Services to run St Helene Artemis hospital.

Job opportunities at St Helene Artemis hospital project

Approximately 900 temporary and permanent job opportunities are estimated to be produced throughout the construction phases and beyond, in addition to the economic benefits of the capital investment. The Architects Collaborative, in collaboration with Atelier MyDzine, AS Gopee Engineers, ARUP Mauritius, Hodari Africa, and RLB Hooloomann, has teamed with GREA for the design, professional engineering services, and construction of St Helene Artemis hospital, which will support local empowerment. The construction of the 135-bed cancer facility is planned to begin within the next several months.
