In an effort to reduce traffic, Ghana is set to launch its first electric rail system in Kumasi. The tram system is another name for this highly developed transportation system, which is mostly present throughout Europe.

This kind of transportation system runs on a rail that rides on tramway tracks on a public urban roadway. The Ghanaian Ministry of Railway Development and the Knights a.s. of the Czech Republic are collaborating to develop the tram technology at this time.

This was made known by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Knights, Dr. Karl Laryea, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), at the launch of the company’s 25th anniversary in Accra.

Overview of the Electric Rail System in Kumasi

According to Laryea, the electric rail system in Kumasi would run three primary lines with the goal of clearing congestion. The installation of an electric rail system in Kumasi, according to him, will improve the commuters’ present means of transportation.

Furthermore, Dr. Laryea said that in order for this project to be successful, there must be a significant transfer of knowledge to the locals who will run the tram system after it is finished.

“Knights a.s. of the Czech Republic facilitated the signing of an MoU between KNUST and the Czech Technical University. This is for the purpose of training Ghanaian professors and technicians. They would then teach students in the Engineering and Transportation faculties of the KNUST how to operate the tram system,” he said.

Additionally, according to Dr. Laryea, the company inked an export contract agreement with the Ministry of Roads and Highways. The company’s tasks included funding, supplying, and installing 50 composite modular steel bridges throughout Ghana.

According to Dr. Laryea, the bridge project is on pace to be finished by May 2023.
