The construction of the 6.7km railway from Broadbeach to Burleigh, which is the third stage of the Gold Coast Light Rail project, has begun. This was recently revealed by Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk.

In addition to the construction of the railway line, the $1.2 billion project will also comprise the construction of eight brand-new stations. Palaszczuk explained that upon completion, the jointly funded project will connect a total of 27 kilometers of the Gold Coast.

“It will therefore provide convenient and smooth public transport that will span from Helensvale to Burleigh Heads. Furthermore, the project will support well up to 760 local opportunities as well as jobs,” said Palaszczuk. She also revealed that the project includes an online interactive page for project updates to the community.

Expectations for the Gold Coast Light Rail Broadbeach-Burleigh section project

Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk said that the project is also an essential part of their successful delivery of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Moreover, Annastacia added that the project will play an even more significant role in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mark Bailey, the Minister for Transport also spoke about the project. The Queensland Minister said that the Queensland Rail Extension Project will contribute towards a reduction in congestion, more especially along Queensland’s roadways.

Mark Bailey also revealed that the next phase of works will see the construction of the rail and road begin down the Gold Coast Highway. In addition, the stations also, are beginning to take shape.

He also noted that the project will contribute towards the prevention of gridlock as the region continues to grow. The Minister of Transport assured that drivers will observe a difference in traffic conditions as the project progresses.
