Greenwich OKs Construction of Smilow Cancer Center at Greenwich Hospital

Greenwich Hospital will expand its cancer treatment services after the Planning and Zoning Commission of the town approved unanimously a new Smilow Cancer Center on its Perryridge Road campus.

The center will be constructed in partnership with Yale New Haven Health and be an extension of Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center, recognized as a national leader and the sole National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Connecticut.

Years in development, the project aims to bring advanced oncology services directly to Greenwich residents, eliminating the need for patients to travel to other cities for specialized treatment.

“This isn’t just about expanding space—it’s about expanding access,” said Robert Blenderman, president of Greenwich Hospital. “We’re now positioned to offer world-class cancer care right here in the community, delivered by expert physicians in a supportive setting.”

Expanded Services to Address Growing Cancer Rates

The new center will incorporate additional disease-specific teams in support of Greenwich’s current oncology specialists. The new center will deliver groundbreaking therapies, advanced technology, and patient-centered infusion areas. Yale New Haven Health says this new facility is arriving at a critical moment, with cancer diagnoses in the Greenwich area projected to rise over 10% in the 10-year period—specifically, for prostate, lung, liver, bladder, pancreatic, and skin cancer.

Robert Berkley, chairman of the hospital’s Board of Trustees and Greenwich resident his entire life, called the commission’s action a resounding win for the town.

“This project enables our residents to receive the highest level of care from nationally recognized specialists without leaving town,” Berkley said.

When completed, the new facility will augment the hospital’s existing oncology services, including diagnostic imaging, surgical services, private oncology suites, and specialized women’s cancer care. Together, the new and old amenities will be able to provide patients with more comprehensive, integrated care.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Greenwich’s Medical Director Dr. William Oh and Director of Precision Medicine at Yale Cancer Center said that the approval is a great milestone for the region.

“This development is about making cutting-edge cancer care local,” said Dr. Oh. “With this expansion, we’re strengthening our ability to deliver personalized treatment options where patients need them most.”

Construction Timeline Pending, Site Details Confirmed

Construction details and timelines for the project are expected to be shared soon. But here is what we know, the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Greenwich Hospital will be integrated into the existing Watson Pavilion and Cohen Pavilion, a significant decision that was unanimously voted on by the Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission on July 1, 2025. The project will occupy approximately 36,000 square feet of the Watson Pavilion and transform it into a state-of-the-art facility. This strategic alignment is intended to bring advanced cancer care directly to the community with the advantages of Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center’s experience, Connecticut’s only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Access to cancer care services

This new building will increase local cancer care services by a significant amount. It will have advanced radiation oncology suites and new therapies in patient-centered infusion spaces. Building on the current resources of Greenwich Hospital in oncology imaging, surgery, oncology private rooms, and women’s cancer, the center will offer a comprehensive and integrated treatment approach. Patients will benefit from multidisciplinary care teams, enrollment in over 300 clinical trials, healing environment, potentially including access to therapeutic garden.

While no individual lead architect for the entire integrated project has been named in the latest approvals, SLAM Collaborative has had experience previously in proposals for Watson Pavilion cancer treatment centers. This project is a significant step forward in meeting the escalating demand for cancer care within the Greenwich area. Providing a cutting-edge, localized answer to patients wanting the most advanced and compassionate treatment.
