Wood has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HYGEN Energy to quicken green hydrogen production for decarbonising transportation in the United Kingdom. On the MoU, HYGEN Energy and Wood will develop solutions for future hydrogen production plants in the UK, starting with the conceptual design for the Herne Bay hydrogen plant, Kent.

The Herne Bay hydrogen plant will produce green hydrogen from existing offshore wind farms which will be used in zero-emission mobility transport solutions in the Southeast of England, the consulting and engineering company stated. It is planned to start production by the 2023 mid and, on final completion, the facility will have a capacity to produce between eight and nine tonnes of green hydrogen on daily basis.

Transition to a much integrated, lower carbon energy mix.

”We are obligated at wood to working with the clients to tackle global energy challenges and we are aware that producing hydrogen, economically and at pace, will be essential as we transition to a much integrated, lower carbon energy mix,” Wood’s President, Operations across Europe, Middle East and Africa, Craig Shanaghey stated. ”With the hydrogen scheme track record and expertise in the full lifecycle, we are excited to be working with HYGEN Energy and anticipating to developing and delivering the impactful solutions which will play a vital role in contributing to the UK government’s hydrogen strategy and inspiring net-zero carbon emissions targets.”

The MoU is working on a tangible step towards offering the UK Government’s strategy to achieving 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. The founder and Executive Chairman of HYGEN Energy, Jo Bamford, stated the MOU with Wood marked a key step forward for the UK’s hydrogen industry: ‘‘At HYGEN Energy, we have great plans to develop a network of green hydrogen production plants in the UK to provide zero-emission fuel for a number of uses, create better jobs, and to help put the UK as a world-leader in the hydrogen sector. With on board partners like Wood, we’re confident that we will realise the ambitions.”
