One of the key features of the overhaul is the transformation of the terminal’s center concourse into a space evoking New York City parks, complete with greenery, benches, and chess tables. Over 30 works of art by artists based in New York will also be displayed throughout the terminal.
This redevelopment is included in the Port Authority’s broader $19 billion vision for the redevelopment of JFK Airport. The first phase of the new concessions will open in 2025, with completion set for late 2026. Terminal 5 currently hosts 165 JetBlue flights and handles more than 35,000 passengers daily. The redevelopment also emphasizes partnerships with local businesses and ACDBE firms to create economic development in the region.
New Dining & Retail
Among the newcomers are Shake Shack, Jacob’s Pickles, Tiki Chick, Serafina, Gotham Burger, Nom Wah, and DiFara Pizza, just to name a few. Specialty coffee shops like Birch Coffee and Devoción, as well as other specialty bars like Mister Paradise and The Blind Barber, will also be part of the fray.
JetBlue in a statement said that apart from eating and shopping, the development is intended to provide a distinctive New York atmosphere. “From signature local flavors to thoughtfully designed spaces, we’re making Terminal 5 more indicative of the city we adore while maintaining the JetBlue experience at its center,” said Marty St. George, president of JetBlue.
Fraport USA President Sabine Trenk mirrored these sentiments in confirming the vision of transforming Terminal 5 into a lively restaurant and retail district that fosters the customer experience and economic innovation.
Port Authority officials also hailed the terminal 5 project’s role in redeveloping JFK as a world-class gateway. Congressman Gregory W. Meeks also added that the revitalization would create jobs, empower small businesses, and ensure that New Yorkers themselves have a direct stake in its success.
