Joule has inked a deal with Caterpillar Inc. and Wheeler Machinery Co. to power its High Performance Compute Data Center Campus in Utah, which it aims to make the largest single campus in the state and among the most advanced data centers in the world. The lofty endeavor will deliver up to four gigawatts of electricity—a figure rarely met in the United States data infrastructure market—to power the burgeoning use of artificial intelligence and high-density computing.

Engineered for the Intermountain West’s hub, Joule’s High Performance Compute Data Center Campus in Utah will be among the world’s most advanced data center operations. Power equipment will rely on Caterpillar’s next-generation G3520K generator sets, complemented by combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) systems and a 1.1 GWh battery energy storage system. This configuration not only offers continuous prime power generation but also captures and recycles waste heat to use as a cooling agent for high-density server arrays—increasing efficiency and sustainability.

The distributed generation solution involves switchgear, inverters, energy storage, and grid-forming standby power that is fueled by different fuels. Joule indicates that the integrated power solution positions it uniquely for reliability and speed-to-market, in part due to Caterpillar’s expanding U.S.-based manufacturing capability.

Building Smarter, Faster: Joule’s Approach to Data Infrastructure

Joule Capital Partners President David Gray emphasized that the venture reflects the company’s business model: “to make AI-capable compute power by integrating world-class campuses and on-demand power.” He went on to say that partnering with Caterpillar and Wheeler enables them to move forward at “gigawatt-scale” faster than traditional approaches allow.

Caterpillar’s Electric Power division expressed that same enthusiasm. “This project is a tremendous example of how we can offer rapid, reliable power generation through integrated energy solutions,” said senior vice president Melissa Busen. Wheeler CEO Bryan Campbell added the alliance “sets a new standard for data center infrastructure.”.

Since computer science, cloud, and enterprise computing are energy-hungry drivers, the Utah mega-campus represents a bold move to expand fast and sustainably.
