The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that it would start the final stage of the Kaduna-Jos Electricity Transmission Line Upgrade Project that will see the 330 Kilo Volts (kV) Kaduna-Jos double circuit transmission line upgraded from a 500 megawatts (MW) energy wheeling capacity to 1500MW.

This phase according to TCN involves the erection of eight triple-circuit towers at the intersection point of the new double-circuit and existing single circuit 330kV transmission lines to enable the stringing of the three 330kV lines.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs said that that this phase would be carried out within a period of eight days, from December 8 to 15.

Power outage caution

Mrs. Mbah warned of a power outage on the 132kV Zaria-Kaduna transmission line, the 33kV Turunku, and part of the 33kV Jaji feeder, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily for the eight days mentioned above.

“TCN’s regret any inconvenience the load shedding might cause electricity customers affected by the reconstruction works on the line,” said the TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs adding that the project will positively impact voltage stability on the axis, and that bulk power transmission would be restored immediately after its completion.

Reasons behind the Kaduna-Jos Electricity Transmission Line Upgrade Project

The decision to reconstruct and upgrade the Kaduna -Jos SC transmission line according to Mrs. Mbah was due to the fact that the line is overloaded and can no longer cope with the load profile in that axis.

“The completion of the new 330kV Kaduna- Jos DC transmission lines,” she said, “will resolve the present and anticipated increase in load demand on the line route.”
