A new chapter is beginning on the Missouri Riverfront as the KC Current, Palmer Square Real Estate Management and Marquee Development officially break ground on a groundbreaking mixed-use district. The multi-phase, privately funded project will redevelop the waterfront and bring the vibrancy of downtown Kansas City to its riverbank.
The $1 billion development comes on the heels of the Kansas City Current’s commitment to the community, a year after the CPKC Stadium world’s first stadium built specifically for a professional women’s team opened. Construction teams have been on site since December 2024, preparing the ground for the vertical buildout of phase one.
This initial $200 million phase adds 429 multifamily units, 48,000 square feet of retail, and over two acres of public space, including a new town square and scenic riverfront promenade. These will be phased in over time, with completion predicted for 2026.
Port KC President Jon Stephens emphasized the significance of the project to revitalizing the riverfront: “Kansas City was a city built on the river, and our vision’s always been to restore that relationship by creating a lively, walkable community. We’ve built the work on trails, residential, and public space—now, thanks to the Current, this district will activate the Berkley Riverfront in ways previously unseen.”
Based at CPKC Stadium, Berkley Riverfront Park, and the Missouri River, the development will make the region a top destination. Local chefs and restaurants will be a key emphasis to make it a culinary icon, further boosting the culinary reputation of Kansas City.
Palmer Square Real Estate Management and Marquee Development are serving as co-developers of the development. The general contractor is VCC Construction, and the Architect of Record is Klover Architects with Perkins Eastman as the Design Architect.
