Updated September 20, 2025: KenGen has embarked on carrying out feasibility studies for a new 200MW wind farm in Marsabit as efforts are made to add another 1,500MW of green energy to Kenya’s grid in the next 10 years to meet growing power demand. The project is supported by KenGen’s 10-year G2G Strategy (2024-2034) and aims to support the government’s goal to decommission thermal power. The project has, however, been faced with difficulties in community consultation and approval by the local Gabra people in the Gas area of Marsabit, where the wind farm would be located. If it goes through, it will be a complimentary step to Africa’s largest wind farm, the Lake Turkana Wind Project which has recently been restored to full strength.

Kenya Wind Farm will be constructed according to a report made by Bloomberg on Friday, which that the Kenyan company Kenya Electricity Generating Company Plc (KenGen) has set up plans to construct what will be the largest wind farm in the whole of Africa. The capacity of the wind farm will be 1GW and shall be situated in the northeastern region of Kenya.

The proposed wind farm will be set up in the county of Marsabit, in the same region with 310MW Lake Turkana wind farm that started functioning in the year 2019 and it manages to supply almost 20% of the electricity in Kenya. This new project will be built in different phases and is anticipated to become operational in the year 2028.

Kenya Wind Farm Project Funding

Kenya Wind Farm

According to the report by Bloomberg the electricity generating company shall cover 75% of the required investment of the project by acquiring debt funding and the remaining part of the project shall be funded by the company itself. The approximated cost of the Kenya Wind Firm project has not been revealed yet as KenGen has planned to announce it after getting permission and confirming the capacity of each of the construction phases of the project. However, French Development Agency (AFD) has shown quite some interest in the project. Feasibility studies for the project of the wind farm are being carried out by its own consultancy firm Sofreco.

Kenya has put commitments of achieving 100% renewables shares by the year 2030. Currently, Kenya is acquiring 92% of its energy from renewable sources of energy. Another similar project to this is the proposed 10GW wind farm project in Egypt by Acwa Power of KSA in Egypt which when successfully executed will be the largest wind farm in Africa surpassing the project. Also this Egyptian proposed wind farm will be the second largest in the world after the planned 20GW Gansu wind farm project of China.
