Kenya’s government has issued a $290 million Nairobi sewer & roads construction tender to a Chinese-headquartered firm. The firm, China Energy Engineering Group (CEEG) is undertaking this project as the first of its kind in the country. According to reports, the deal was made public through the Social Environmental Impact Assessment (ESIA) report. Moreover, it detailed the scope of implementation regarding the project such as the construction of a new sewer line. It also entails construction of pedestrian walkways and cycle lanes along the Nairobi River.
The firm, in partnership with the Ministry of Defense, will also expand the existing sewer treatment plant. The plant, based in Kariobangi is expected to have a much larger handling capacity once the project is done. The two entities are also expected to build bridges and cycle lanes along the river. “The overall goal of the project is to enhance the health and quality of life for residents of Nairobi,” the ESIA report noted. The report also noted the aim is to promote a cleaner urban environment by providing comprehensive sewerage services. These includes the collection and treatment of wastewater. If well implemented, the project could build on the success of the Nairobi River Sewerage Improvement Program as the second phase still progresses.

The Significance of the Nairobi Sewer & Roads Construction Tender to the Capital
The impact of the Nairobi sewer & road construction tender is one that cannot be understated when it comes to Nairobi’s drainage system. The capital’s drainage has often been in a deplorable state with action not taken over the years. The tender provides a promising trajectory towards remedying the situation. Its scope such as the construction of new trunk sewers and expansion of the reticulation system will be fundamental.

The increased capacity of wastewater treatment plants will also reduce pollution levels significantly in the Nairobi Rivers. Moreover, it will lower the incidence of waterborne diseases and mortality rates. Ultimately, it will boost the population’s productivity. The first phase of the project involves dredging the river, managing stormwater, and improving infrastructure for residents. The project is being funded by the government as it seeks to restore the river basin, improve living standards, mitigate flooding, and transform the urban landscape.
