The construction of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret will resume following the release of funds to the contractor. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed on Monday that the contractor had received the payment and would resume work immediately. This comes after delays that led to the contractor abandoning the site multiple times due to delayed payments.

Project factsheet

  • Project name: Kipchoge Keino Stadium Upgrade

  • Location: Eldoret, Kenya

  • Cost: KSh. 3.5 billion (with possible overrun)

  • Purpose: Upgrade for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

  • Status: Construction resuming after payment

  • Key stakeholders: Ministry of Sports, Sports Kenya, National Assembly

Concerns had been rising among locals as the upgrade work stalled despite the government’s KSh. 3.5 billion allocation for the project. The stadium is part of Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 AFCON with Uganda and Tanzania.

The National Assembly’s Sports Committee recently visited the site, only to find no ongoing work. Since the official launch by President William Ruto in January 2025, no construction had taken place.

Kipchoge Keino Stadium sports committee demands action

The committee chairman, Dan Wanyama, expressed frustration, demanding that Sports Kenya and the Ministry of Sports submit documentation of all payments for the project within a week. Wanyama issued a stern warning, stating:

We are putting the Ministry of Sports on notice — the deadlines must be met. If the work is not completed on time, heads will roll.

In response, the Ministry of Sports acted quickly, disbursing the necessary funds. Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya assured the public that work would now proceed without further delay. he confirmed:

The contractor received the funds last Friday, and the work will now proceed to completion.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya also noted that the project cost could exceed KSh. 3.5 billion, revealing that KSh. 300 million had already been spent on the upgrades.

With the pressure from parliament and funds now in place, the community is hopeful that Kipchoge Keino Stadium will be ready in time for the 2027 AFCON, strengthening Eldoret’s position as a key venue for the tournament.
