Ernie Campbell and Gopal Vagjini were recently assigned an 11-acre parcel of land by the government for the construction of Homa Bay affordable housing. Located in Makongeni estate, the site was handed over by Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Zakariah Njeru.

The construction works are expected to take place in phases. The first phase, which will take 12 months, will involve the construction of around 110 units. There will be 40 two-bedroom houses, 40 one-bedroom houses, as well as 30 studios in total. 

The apartment buildings will have four-storey structures.

A Level Three health center will be built on the land by the contractor, Ernie Campbell Company Limited. The planned health center will boost health services, according to Ms. Wanga, who noted that the town already has a teaching and referral hospital.

She stated that they already have a sewage system in place. She added that the water supply is all that is left. As part of the project financed by the government, she requested that the state establish a fire station. Already nearby is an early learning center.

Charles Hinga, the nominee for Housing Principal Secretary, suggested that the project use clean energy by utilizing solar power as well as collecting rainwater that will be stored below the ground.

Remarks on the Homa Bay affordable housing project

Speaking at the site handover ceremony, the governor of Homabay urged the contractor to hire workers from the county. According to governor Wanga, the Homa Bay affordable housing project will improve the lives of locals, in addition, to helping the community manage its housing shortage.

She continued by saying that her government would ensure that residents would be prioritized when the housing units are allocated. Each family would be limited to acquiring just one.
