Construction is underway for the Twelvemile Solar 1 & 2 projects in southern Oklahoma. These solar facilities are expected to be among the largest of their kind in the state once completed. The 152.5-megawatt (MW) joint solar installation is being developed by Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) as part of its growing presence in Oklahoma’s clean energy market.
At peak construction, Twelvemile 1 & 2 will produce up to 350 local jobs and $29 million in estimated state and local property taxes over their lifespan. The two sites are expected to alleviate strain on the grid during peak-demand seasons and contribute to overall regional economic growth.
This investment not only benefits a stronger grid but also ignites regional development through job creation, business attraction and infrastructure growth in southern Oklahoma,” stated Eran Mahrer, LRE’s Chief Commercial Officer. “We are dedicated to community-based development and ethical sourcing that yields long-term value.
Twelvemile portfolio
LRE bought the Twelvemile portfolio from Red River Renewable Energy LLC, a joint venture between SunChase Power LLC-Eolian LP. Both were part of the early development phase, which helped shape today’s signature clean energy project in the area.
“These solar facilities will be the largest of their kind in Oklahoma when completed,” said Eolian CEO Aaron Zubaty. “They’ll be important in helping to mitigate grid stress during hot summer afternoons and promoting a more reliable energy mix.”
Twelvemile projects form part of LRE’s wider 724 MW Oklahoma solar portfolio, including the nearby projects in Mayes County. Although the spotlight is on Twelvemile, it’s interesting to know that energy from this development will also fuel a long-term energy contract with Google, backing its goal of 24/7 carbon-free electricity.
Under a series of power purchase agreements facilitated by LevelTen Energy’s LEAP platform, electricity from Twelvemile and other LRE developments in Oklahoma will be marketed to the Grand River Dam Authority and eventually be used to power Google data centers in Oklahoma.
SunChase Power Vice President Teran Smith emphasized that early-stage coordination made the project possible. “The Mayes and Twelvemile Solar projects are the result of strategic siting and early collaboration. We’re proud to see these investments generate long-term value for Oklahoma’s communities and grid.”
