Mayo Clinic has announces $1.9 billion Phoenix Campus expansion plans, its largest investment to date in Arizona. It’s all part of the “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” vision to revolutionize patient care through the integration of state-of-the-art technology and reimagining healthcare environments for a better experience.
A Vision for the Future of Healthcare
“Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Arizona is the culmination of our broader vision to fundamentally reimagine our physical infrastructure,” said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “Through this project, we are redefining health care both physically and digitally, blurring lines between inpatient and outpatient care. We’re hoping to create a one-of-a-kind experience for patients and employees and set a global standard for medical excellence.”
Key Elements of the Expansion
The Phoenix Campus expansion will introduce 1.2 million square feet of new and renovated space, including:
A new procedural building
A five-story addition to the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building
State-of-the-art technology integration
11 new operating rooms
Two new patient units with 48 additional beds
An improved arrival experience for patients and visitors
One of the biggest additions is a two-story indoor promenade that connects various buildings, making it easier for patients and visitors to move around the campus. The expansion will also introduce “care neighborhoods,” which will group similar clinical services together to offer a more integrated and logical healthcare experience.
“This investment will transform the patient and employee experience in Arizona as Mayo Clinic continues to innovate in clinical care, research, and education,” said Dr. Richard J. Gray, CEO, Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “By expanding clinical space on the Phoenix campus by nearly 60 percent, we will have space to see more patients than ever while advancing medical innovation.”

Part of a Larger Transformation
The Arizona expansion is part of Mayo Clinic’s overall “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” strategy, which integrates physical and digital infrastructure across locations. Similar projects are under way in Rochester, Minn., and Jacksonville, Fla., and finished developments are found in Mankato, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis.
The design phase of the Phoenix expansion begins this year with a completion goal of 2031. It will increase the clinical space on the campus by 59% when finished.
To bring this vision to life, Mayo Clinic assembled an initial design and construction team that includes McCarthy as the general contractor, Gensler as the architect, and Arup Group as a strategic partner. Additional partners will be announced in the coming months.
“The surge in growth in our region has created a huge demand for specialized care, which our existing infrastructure is not able to serve,” explained Dr. Gray. “Arizona is the ideal place to develop new therapies, stimulate collaborations, and further enhance Mayo Clinic’s distinctive model of care.”
This investment follows on the heels of Mayo Clinic’s own recent $748 million expansion that doubled the size of its north Phoenix campus and brought an additional 2,000 high-paying jobs. With this new $1.9 billion investment, the clinic will generate an additional 3,500 jobs, positioning it as a leader in cutting-edge healthcare.
