Mayo Clinic’s ambitious $1.9 billion expansion of its Phoenix campus will transform healthcare in Arizona. During development, the project will deliver advanced medical technology, expand clinical space by 59%, and create thousands of jobs. This investment is the clinic’s biggest in the state to date and is part of its “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” plan to reengineer patient care.
A Vision for the Future of Healthcare
“Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Arizona is the realization of our bigger vision to re-envision fundamentally our physical infrastructure,” said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, Mayo Clinic president and CEO. “Through this project, we’re revolutionizing healthcare both physically and virtually, erasing boundaries between inpatient and outpatient care. We’re aiming to build a unique experience for patients and staff and establish a worldwide standard for medical excellence.”
Key Elements of the Expansion
The expansion of Phoenix Campus will offer 1.2 million square feet of remodeled and additional space, such as:
New procedure building
Five-story expansion of the Specialty Building of the Mayo Clinic
Incorporation of advanced technology
11 new operating rooms
Two new patient units of 48 new beds
Streamlined arrival for patients and guests
One of the main features is the construction of a two-story indoor promenade that connects various buildings, enabling patient and visitor circulation. Additionally, the use of “care neighborhoods” will group related clinical services together, offering an integrated health experience.
“This investment will transform the patient and employee experience in Arizona as Mayo Clinic continues to grow in clinical care, research, and education,” said Dr. Richard J. Gray, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “By bringing on close to 60% more clinical space on the Phoenix campus, we will have the space to see more patients than ever while advancing medical innovation.”
A Larger Transformation in Healthcare
The Phoenix project is among the Mayo Clinic’s “Bold. Forward. Unbound.” developments nationwide, bringing physical and virtual infrastructure together on its locations. Others are in development in Jacksonville, Fla., and Rochester, Minn., and completed ones are located in La Crosse, Wis., and Mankato, Minn.
With the design phase to begin in 2025 and finish by 2031, Mayo Clinic partnered with industry giants to bring this vision to life. McCarthy is the general contractor, Gensler the architect, and Arup Group a strategic partner, with additional collaborators to be announced later in the next few months.
“The surge in growth in our area has created an enormous demand for specialized care that our existing infrastructure cannot meet,” stated Dr. Gray. “Arizona is the ideal place to drive new therapies, foster collaborations, and further develop Mayo Clinic’s distinctive model of care.”
Economic and Job Growth Impact
The expansion follows Mayo Clinic’s recent $748 million investment, which doubled the size of its North Phoenix campus and provided 2,000 high-wage jobs. On top of that $1.9 billion investment, the clinic will provide a further 3,500 jobs, cementing its status as a leader in cutting-edge medicine.
