Mercy Housing California has broken ground on a 63-unit, 41,000-square-foot affordable housing community located at 3552 Whittier Boulevard in Los Angeles. The $40 million HHH Innovation Challenge grant will be used to build the second of five proposed developments.

The financing enables the community to be constructed using a prefabricated, modular design. It will be integrated with the on-site foundations. The four-story structure will offer apartment units to those who have previously been homeless and a management unit.

In addition to on-site property management offices, there will be permanent supportive housing services. Additionally, with a community lounge, a community laundry room, and a community kitchen.

Outside hardscaped and planted areas, residents will have access to communal spaces and facilities. With the aim of developing a scalable and replicable concept using prefabricated modular design and construction, Mercy Housing acquired the land.

Abode Communities is handling the Mercy affordable housing community architecture and design. Suffolk Construction on the other hand is in charge of managing construction. Factory OS is responsible for creating the interiors of the apartments. The neighborhood is expected to be finished by August 2023.

The groundwork for the building may be finished on-site thanks to the novel technique, and Factory OS can create individual dwelling units off-site. Further, cutting expenses, project duration, and manufacturing waste accelerate the building process.

“Suffolk’s close collaboration with Mercy Housing has given us the tools and interdisciplinary teamwork required to realize projects like 3552 Whittier Boulevard. The lack of supportive housing is a problem on a national scale.

According to Ken Summers, general manager of Suffolk Los Angeles, “Suffolk is committed to proactively addressing the situation with developers, producing a brighter tomorrow for our local neighborhoods and beyond.”
