Methodist Hospital Stone Oak (MHSO) has officially begun a $104 million vertical expansion and renovation project with the goal of meeting the increasingly growing healthcare demands of North San Antonio and surrounding communities. The expansion introduces an additional 84,000 square feet of new clinical and support space to the hospital, increasing its licensed total bed capacity by more than 20 percent.
The two-story expansion will tower above the existing West Tower, adding a 5th and 6th floor with 54 new patient beds total — 40 for medical telemetry on the 5th and 14 critical care ICU beds on the 6th. The 6th floor will be partially shell space, providing expansion capacity as needed.
In addition to the new patient care areas, the development will also upgrade core functional facilities, including a larger central supply department, expanded laboratory space, and better parking facilities. The hospital kitchen will also be completely refurbished to offer better facilities for patients, staff, and visitors.
New Bed Capacity
Once complete, Methodist Hospital Stone Oak will see its total licensed bed count rise from 245 to 299 and overall system bed count to 341 when the Methodist Hospital Stone Oak Rehabilitation Center is included.
“This vertical expansion is a new chapter in our commitment to serving humanity in the name of God,” said Methodist Hospital Stone Oak CEO Michael Beaver. “By expanding two new levels, we’re not just increasing capacity, but offering more space for healing and hope when families need it most. Our growth will allow us to expand the nationally recognized healthcare services that we provide for families in our community well into the future.”

The expansion team includes ESa (Earl Swensson Associates) as architect and Robins & Morton as general contractor — two of the country’s most experienced firms with significant history in healthcare facility planning and building.
This is one of a recent trend of investments in access to care. Methodist Hospital Stone Oak welcomed its first neighborhood free-standing emergency room in 2024 — Methodist ER Bulverde — bringing emergency services to Comal County.
The vertical growth and improvements are expected to significantly enhance Methodist Hospital Stone Oak’s ability to deliver advanced, high-acuity care while addressing the area’s explosive population growth.
