Mississauga is moving forward with a major transit initiative along its waterfront, appointing HDR and GEI Consultants to deliver detailed design and oversee contract administration for the Lakeshore Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

A Corridor Built for Growth

The project will redefine approximately two kilometers of Lakeshore Road, between East Avenue and Etobicoke Creek, an area that developers are preparing for heavy residential and commercial development. The city will construct the new BRT line as a multimodal corridor that promotes mobility while integrating access to the waterfront.

Scheduled upgrades include an expanded road, center-running busways, weather-protected stations, and improved cycling and walking infrastructure. Utilities under the corridor also will be upgraded to support future development, forming a foundation for long-term growth.

Building on Past Work

HDR has a good acquaintance with this section of Mississauga. HDR previously led environmental study and conceptual planning for a Lakeshore BRT, and delivered a transportation master plan for the area. That project has positioned the team well to advance the project to its next key stage, which will include detailed design, tendering, procurement, and construction administration.

City officials say the project will have a major impact on tapping the potential of southeast Mississauga. Commissioner of Transportation and Works Sam Rogers states the corridor is poised for change with new development such as Lakeview Village reshaping the landscape. He further stated that proceeding with the BRT will make the waterfront accessible and inclusive.

From HDR’s viewpoint, the assignment is a continuation of a decade-plus commitment. Cristian Huma, HDR project director, pointed out that the company has been working on planning within the corridor for over ten years, and advancing the vision into detailed design is a thrilling milestone.

Mississauga officials call the Lakeshore BRT something more than a transit line — an investment in city-building. By encouraging sustainable mobility, active transportation, and neighborhood-to-waterfront connection, the project has the potential to shape the city’s growth for decades to come.
