The Moldova Wants Highway Association (MVA) has released fresh images from the construction sites on the A7 Highway, highlighting progress on Lot 1 between Focșani and Bacău. The association, together with SPEDITION UMB SRL, SA&PE CONSTRUCT SRL, and TEHNOSTRADE SRL, is working to complete roughly 4,200 linear metres of structures this year, including 2,560 metres of concrete and more than 1,600 metres with metal beams.

Project factsheet: Romania’s A7 Highway Focșani–Bacău

  • Total length: 95.90 km (Focșani – Bacău)

  • Lot 1: Focșani – Domnești Târg, 35.60 km

  • Lot 2: Domnești Târg – Răcăciuni, 38.78 km

  • Lot 3: Răcăciuni – Bacău, 21.52 km

  • Builders: SPEDITION UMB SRL – SA&PE CONSTRUCT SRL – TEHNOSTRADE SRL

  • Contract signed: December 2022

  • Execution time: 30 months per lot

  • Planned opening: 2025

On the 35.6 km stretch from Focșani to Domnești Târg, mobilization has been strong. The latest CESTRIN report notes that physical execution has reached 60%. MVA warns, however, that achieving the same level of progress on other lots will be challenging. Several conditions must align to meet the PNRR deadlines, which are crucial for accessing 100% non-refundable European Union funding. Specifically, the sections from Focșani to Gherăiești need completion by August 2026.

Romania’s A7 Highway Focșani–Bacău progress

The A7 Highway project forms part of Romania’s broader strategy to modernise its road network and improve connectivity in Moldova. The Government confirmed that five lots across the Focșani – Bacău and Bacău – Pașcani sections will receive PNRR grant financing, while Lot 3 of the Bacău – Pașcani section will remain on loan funding due to delayed readiness.

Filming by MVA on 4 September 2025 showed good progress on Lot 1. The association continues to monitor developments closely, particularly the pace of work on the remaining lots. Successful completion on time is essential not only for road connectivity but also for securing the full PNRR grant, which will reduce financial burdens for the Government.

With steady construction and careful coordination, the A7 Highway could significantly boost travel and trade in Romania’s Moldova region. Yet, MVA emphasises that meeting deadlines will require continuous effort, clear planning, and uninterrupted work across all lots.

Similar large-scale initiatives are underway across Europe, including Italy’s Ragusa–Catania Highway project, which is upgrading eastern Sicily’s transport corridor with new lanes, viaducts, and overpasses to improve mobility and safety.
