Morocco’s Crown Prince Moulay Hassan inaugurated the newly rebuilt Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. This stadium is set to join a number of stadiums that the country is currently developing such as the Grand Stade de Tanger, as it seeks to become a major sports hub in Africa

The stadium newly inaugurated stadium is part of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Complex. Additionally, the stadium has a capacity of 68,500. Therefore this makes it the second-largest stadium in the country. The reconstruction works of the stadium began in 2023. Also, these construction works took a period of two years.

Construction timeline: The old stadium was demolished in the summer of 2023, with the new facility completed in late 2025. The rapid construction has been noted as a potential Guinness World Record for the fastest stadium construction ever.

Cost: Approximately $75 million for the stadium reconstruction.

Architects and construction: A collaboration of firms, including the Moroccan firm Orange Atelier and Populous. Furthermore, Temsan was the steel contractor.

Design and features:

  • The facade is inspired by the design of palm leaves.
  • A roof covers the seating area.
  • The pitch is a hybrid natural turf, combining natural grass and synthetic fibers, to meet FIFA specifications. It’s the first of its kind in Africa.
  • VIP and hospitality areas include VVIP and VIP boxes, lounges, and a press box.
  • Technological features include an advanced lighting system with high-definition LED screens, a modern sound system, and smart crowd management technologies.
  • The project incorporates sustainable practices, such as solar energy sources and eco-friendly materials.

Sports complex: The stadium is part of a larger complex that also includes:

  • An athletics stadium (Stade Olympique de Rabat) with a capacity of 22,000 seats.
  • An indoor multisport arena (Salle Moulay Abdellah arena).
  • An Olympic swimming pool.
  • Football training pitches.
  • A large car park with space for 5,200 vehicles.

Architects

The project was led by Moroccan firm Orange Atelier in partnership with Populous.

The inauguration was attended by the workforce involved in the stadium’s reconstruction. Furthermore, the stadium was officially opened to the public on Friday with Morocco’s national team playing Niger in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Furthermore, the complex also houses an Olympic swimming pool, football training pitches, and an indoor multisport arena. The stadium is expected to host key matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
