Morocco’s ONCF Launches Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Upgrade Works in Casablanca

The Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) has just made an announcement of the commencement of the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Upgrade works in Casablanca.

The works will foresee an additional of extra tracks, six in total: two for high-speed trains, two for local commuter trains, and two for other trains. This was revealed by ONCF in a press release. Furthermore, at least 40 railway structures in Casablanca will undergo renovation works in order to accommodate these changes.

Additionally, the works will include the installation of a new-generation signaling system, construction of new high-speed and local stations, 600 km of electrified tracks, and nine maintenance centers for trains and equipment.

Timeline

The construction works will take place from September 2025 to the end of 2027. Furthermore, it will be conducted in multiple phases. Each phase will have specific transport plans. These plans will include incorporation of night-time and daytime work.

Some Stations to be Closed Temporarily for Renovations

However, some stations like Mers Sultan in Casablanca will be closed temporarily for renovations. The first phase commences on September 15. This phase will focus on adjusting train schedules while maintaining regular service.

ONCF has stated that it has put in place strict planning to minimize disruption. Furthermore, it will deploy experienced staff and specialized equipment. Also, special support system for travelers will commence on September 8.

Significance of the Upgrade

Upon completion, the Kenitra-Marrakech LGV line will extend the Tangier-Kenitra high-speed route by 430 kilometres. Therefore, the project will enable travelers will be able to go from Tangier to Marrakech in just 2 hours and 40 minutes.

The upgrade works aim to create a modern railway infrastructure that meets travel needs. This is especially between Mohammedia and Nouaceur.
