14 Trees, a joint venture between Holcim, a global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions, and CDC Group, UK’s development finance institution, recently announced that the construction of Mvule Gardens, Africa’s largest 3D-printed housing complex in Kilifi, Kenya, shall begin in early 2022.

The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the project’s show house, Trees House No. 0, which has already achieved EDGE Advanced Certification that exemplifies achievement in 45% energy savings, 23% water savings, and 71% less embodied energy in materials.

Mvule Gardens project overview

The 52-house complex will be built in partnership with Savo Project Developers, the minds behind the Green Heart of Kenya, a regenerative master-planned town and productive agricultural landscape in Kilifi, utilizing Holcim’s proprietary ink, TectorPrint that the local subsidiary, Bamburi Cement, will introduce in the market soon.

Upon completion, the Mvule Gardens housing complex shall offer 1 bed, 2 bed, and 3 bedroom units starting at Ksh2.46m.

Fast-tracking delivery of affordable houses in Kenya

Speaking during the show house’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Charles Hinga, the PS in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, praised the project, saying it will potentially fast-track the delivery of affordable houses in the East African country in line with the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) owing to its futuristic 3D printing and smart design that will enable a wall to be built in less than 12 hours.
