According to Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency Chief Executive Officer Engineer Samuel Oruma, the Narok Town Sewerage System, which cost Sh. 1.7 billion to construct, is complete and ready for commissioning.

500 households have already been linked in the initial phase to functionalize the operation at the plant, according to engineer Oruma. He said that the project had a capacity to serve roughly 200,000 people.

He stated that the project’s construction began in 2019 and was concluded in December 2020. Also, he said that it was the first of its kind among the 22 ongoing projects being carried out by the Water Works Development Agencies in the County to be completed on time.

The project will be operated by the Narok Water and Sewerage Company (NARWASCO). The Government of Kenya (GoK) in partnership with the Africa Development Bank will fund the project.

The Narok Town Sewerage System’s location

He stated that the plant is located on an 80-acre parcel of land. The county government purchased the land in the Limanet area, on the outskirts of Narok town.

He said it was the first of its kind in Narok and could treat 3500 cubic meters of waste water per day.

Regarding environmental management, Eng. Oruma also said that they are collaborating with the National Environment Management Authority to guarantee that the recycled water that flows into the River Narok is safe for human consumption.

The project is also a huge relief for Narok traders and residents. For a long time, they had to employ exhausters to empty their sewers, incurring significant costs.

He said that the project should be commissioned at any time by President William Ruto. The CEO expressed his delight that the project was a success.

Additionally, the project’s completion also shows how closely the two tiers of government collaborate for the benefit of the people. This is according to David Mpatiany, chairman of the Narok Chamber of Commerce.

Sinohydro Corporation Limited, a Chinese company, constructed the project.

Once the system is implemented, the county government will be required to do regular maintenance on it. This will also ensure that it continues to serve the residents for a longer period of time.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta launched a massive water project in Narok Town in 2017 that cost Sh1.5 billion and was funded by the Kenyan government and also the Japanese International Cooperation Agencies.
