Willmott Dixon to build school facilities in a £12m contract. The location is at Ysgol Rhydywaun by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, a school in Penywaun, near Aberdare. The scope the project will include establishment of an eight-classroom building, with drama and music facilities and also rooms for local community use. Other works will include construction of a brand new school reception, sports hall, fitness suite and changing rooms, along side a 45-space parking lot and bike store.

Appointed for the job using the SEWSCAP framework, Willmott Dixon construction will rise the school’s capacity 187 higher for the academic year starting in September 2022.
Working during a live environment, Willmott Dixon also will pull down the present caretaker’s house and take away temporary classrooms. Movements of most heavy machinery will be under restriction to the school’s summer holidays.

The new facilities at Ysgol Rhydywaun is part of a wider education investment across the Cynon Valley , with £10.2m facilities being delivered at Hirwaun Primary School recently. Construction of a £4.5m extension and new childcare building at YGG will also follow after.
Ian Jones, director at Willmott Dixon said: ‘‘We have worked closely with the Council and our partners to make an exceptional learning environment for the area people . We have an extended history of delivering schools across Wales and that we will make sure that construction of Ysgol Rhydywaun directly benefits the community; this is often through a programme of opportunities which includes work experience, apprenticeships, mentoring and employment. In addition, we will be partnering with locals to provide employment and training opportunities to those people furthest away from the jobs market.’’

Apart from the new facilities at Ysgol Rhydywaun, Dixon earlier built the £38m Llys Cadwyn development in Pontypridd for Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, which it completed in October 2020. The scheme changed a derelict 1960s shopping centre into a mixed use development, creating a new home for Transport for Wales along with further office space, a library and leisure facilities.
