Awarded to Kier, the £43m worth NHS surgical centre contract is a component of the hospital’s expansion plan following the company’s completion of the eye centre there.

Kier will use the modern ways of construction like hybrid precast concrete frame, the envelope of the building being precast with windows and brickwork completed off site.
Procured through Frameworks Scotland 2, the NHS Surgical Centre will consist of theatre suites, surgical admissions and recovery unit (SARU), surgical administration space, central sterilising and processing department facilities. Furthermore, the facility will consist of endoscopy unit, orthopaedic amenities, outpatient and pre-operative spaces, and staff wellbeing places.

NHS Golden Jubilee chief executive Jann Gardner uttered that they recently marked the completion of Phase 1 of the expansion with the opening of the new, state-of-the-art, Eye Centre: the first of the National Treatment Centres. “We now anticipate to benefiting patients in Scotland with the new Surgical Centre, which will complete in 2023. The new Centre will combat planned operations and specialise in demand areas like additional orthopaedic, diagnostic endoscopy, and general surgery.”

The NHS surgical centre

The NHS surgical centre project is set to complete by June 2023. When complete, the new facility will offer more than 9,400 new outpatient consultations in addition over 4,400 pre-operative assessments and quite 13,900 other procedures. At least 65% of the supply chain will come from a 30-mile radius of the hospital. Kier will also avail a range of opportunities to the local community including at least ten apprenticeships, work placements, job opportunities and career talks at schools.

Kier have also partnered with University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust to construct a Cancer Centre of Immunology. Works include designing and building the UK’s first dedicated centre for cancer immunology research, bringing together world-leading cancer scientists and enable interdisciplinary teams to expand clinical trials and develop more lifesaving drugs.
