Nation Energy to construct a 500MW coal-fired power plant in Nigeria

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the One Nation Energy Platform Ltd for construction of a 500MW coal-fired power plant in Enugu, Nigeria. The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, signed the agreement on behalf of the FG, while Dr. Uzoma Obiyo the Chairman of the One Nation Energy signed on behalf the company.

According to Mrs Grace Njoku who spoke and signed a statement on behalf of the Deputy Director, Press, Mr Timothy Oyedeji, and the coal-fired power plant project was welcome as it supports sought of power mix for the power sector in the country.

On completion, the coal-fired power plant project is expected to help respond to current power challenges such as low generation and sabotage from vandals. The statement read by Njoku indicated that South East zone had enough coal resources to supply the amount of power – 500MW- to the country. Ugwuaji also hosts largest transmission sub-stations in the country.

Ghana will also see construction of other coal power plants such as the Sunon Asogli Power Plant expected to produce 1,200MW after second Phase; and the 350MW power plant in the Western Region – an investment of UAEA.
