Residential houses in Nigeria are set to be constructed at a cost of USD550M, the Enugu State government has announced. The housing construction project is a partnership between FIT Consult Limited and the Enugu state.

In a media brief to journalists in Enugu during the formal inauguration  of the project at the state secretariat, Lands and Urban Development Commissioner, Solomon Onah, said since the birth of the state on August 27, 1991, no new area had been initiated in a proper manner with full modern facilities until the present project.

Situated on over 132 hectares in the valley-and-hill part of the New Independence Layout, on the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state, Onah said the project, named “HELIU Residences” was a public-private collaboration arrangement in which government would source for the land required, while the consortium, FIT Consult Ltd, will undertake the development of the infrastructure, so that the serviced plots could be made available for individual development.

Onah added that the estimated total cost of the project would be about N3.5 billion, and expressed confidence that the much needed money that the state required would be sourced from the sale of plots, while creating job opportunities for the many youth in the state.

“Enugu State will soon become a giant construction work yard that will certainly bear a new face lift within the next 24 months,” he said.

Chief Loretta Aniagolu ,the chief executive officer at FIT Consult Ltd, who gave an insight into the project, said her company and its consortium would  finance the construction of  the infrastructure and houses which are estimated to cost N3.5 billion and N7.5 billion respectively.

She added that the Chinese construction giant, Yuanda Enterprise Group, was already in the state to start work at the project site, saying that close to 500 houses will occupy the 500 plots but insisted that in the event that a developer fails to develop the land on or before March 2017, the government will revoke the land and refund the person’s money.

In an explanation she said that the HELIU Residences in addition to residential areas would also have commercial areas. She further added that only single family or twin duplexes/bungalows of two floors or less, including the ground floor would be built in the new plan under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
