The River State government in Nigeria has commenced the rehabilitation project on the East-West Road section. This was revealed by Nyesom Wike, the State Governor during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and 6 companies. He further revealed and confirmed the total amount of the rehabilitation works is to cost US$15.15m.
The state government has join forces with 6 companies operating within the state to work hand in hand on the 6km project which includes the decaying lanes of the East-west Road beginning from Eleme Junction all the way to Onne Exit point.
The 6 selected companies to participate on the East-West Road rehabilitation are the Integrated Logistics Limited (Intels), the West African Container Terminal Limited, the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited, Oil and Gas Free Zone and the Indorama Petrochemicals Limited. However, the Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) is presently handling the rehabilitation of part of the East-west Road section for a period of 2 months.
According to Governor Wike, the project shareholders are required to contribute the first installment of US$ 7.5m. The contribution is to be deposited directly to the RCC and the remaining amount to be settled once the company attains the 80% mark complete on the road project. The project aims at providing a conducive environment for business operation specifically the Oil and Gas Free Zone as well the people’s movement particularly from Port Harcourt to Eleme. Furthermore, the project has brought about saving 50,000 jobs for the present workers and impacted positively on the living standards of the state residents.
