The cost of rebuilding and repairing the recently flooded North West Homes by the recent high rains is estimated to be above R30 million. This is according to Lena Miga, the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, who was speaking at the handover of a newly built house to a family in the Pheding part of Lebotlwane village last week.

According to the MEC, the department has completed its evaluation and is in the process of submitting to the national department for a human settlements catastrophe fund. Emergency services have already been dispatched to impacted regions in several municipalities, according to the MEC, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and other government agencies.

Human Settlements Disaster Fund for the Flooded North West Homes

MEC Miga stated that when the incident was disclosed, the government responded. He stated that they have now ensured that we take stock of what is required to restore the dignity of individuals who have been impacted by the calamity. He stated that they were in contact with the National Department because they were applying for a Human Settlements Disaster Fund worth over R30 million rand, according to their audit.

The severe rains wreaked havoc across the province, affecting a large number of households. A kind Samaritan offered to build a house for the Kgwadi family as part of his company’s corporate social investment while the government was engaged with clean-up operations and assisting impacted families.

MEC Miga, the Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality, Masango Manyike, and other local authorities presented the Kgwadis with the keys to their newly constructed house last week. Hans Kgwadi, who lost most of his belongings during the recent severe rains, was glad to get a home, which he stated would help his poor health, according to the department. The MEC has urged many other developers doing business with the government to help the poor in the regions where they work, stating that the government alone cannot defeat poverty and unemployment. The government will provide a comprehensive assessment of the disaster’s scope for the recently flooded North West houses shortly.
