Le Gestionnaire du Réseau de Transport de l’Electricité, dénommée/Algerian electricity transmission system operator (GRTE.Spa) is set to receive a technical assistance grant from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) for a project to modernize Algerian national electricity grid.

GRTE.Spa is a subsidiary of Socièté Nationale de l’Electricité et du Gaz/National Company for Electricity and Gas (Sonelgaz), a state-owned utility in charge of electricity and natural gas distribution in Algeria, while USTDA is an independent agency of the United States government formed to advance economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries across the globe.

Envisioned use of the grant in the project to modernize Algerian national electricity grid

The USTDA grant, which is close to US$ 0.6M is specifically planned to help GRTE plan the development of an automated distributed control system that will allow it to integrate energy from solar and wind sources into its grid. This system will increase the efficiency of GRTE’s grid while strengthening its management of the North African country’s distributed power generation resources.

The gesture not only bolsters the bilateral relationship between our two countries but also joins in the efforts to secure reliable, clean, and renewable energy for the people of Algeria.”

Call for expressions of interest in the project

Enoh T. Ebong, USTDA’s Acting Director on the other hand said that USTDA’s support for the project to modernize Algerian national electricity grid demonstrates the agency’s commitment to supporting climate-smart infrastructure around the world.

He also mentioned that USTDA’s engagement in this project also creates opportunities for GRTE to benefit from cutting-edge American technologies as it embarks on its planned grid upgrades.
