The Guildhall regeneration site in Nottingham has received plans for a significant project from student housing company Vita Group. Plans call for converting a Victorian magistrate’s court into apartments.

The 1887-built Guildhall in Nottingham, along with the city’s historic fire and police stations, are all part of the Alderley Edge company’s plans to convert them into a 967-room student complex. The Guildhall, it was stated, has been “underused and in need of renovation and redevelopment for several years.”

It plans to construct a public food hall with room for 500 diners and independent food vendors. This is along with the housing, which would include a dance studio, gym for residents, study areas, a movie theater, and game rooms.

It would be the city’s second Vita Student block after its Station Street project and features a novel idea. House of Social is the developer, and it offers “high-end” shared apartments for second-and third-year students. The location is between Shakespeare Street, North Church Street, and South Sherwood Street. According to Vita, the hotel project on the Guildhall site will complement the existing plans for the site.

“A severely underutilized redevelopment opportunity, Guildhall has the potential to be one of Nottingham’s major monuments once again, bringing significant investment to the city and bringing a historically significant building back to life,” said Mark Oakes, chief commercial officer at Vita Group.

“The proposals seek to relieve pressure on the local housing stock while simultaneously producing top-notch student housing with exceptional amenities. The Market Food Hall will establish a popular attraction for the entire city. It will be offering the ideal setting for exciting new independent restaurateurs to introduce their new businesses to patrons around the region.”
