Major construction on the redevelopment of Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre has started. In order to make room for a new Tommyfield Market and events space, the existing TJ Hughes site will be extensively cleaned up before being demolished.
The top of Parliament Square has hoardings up, and these will grow as work goes on. However, all nearby businesses including Parliament Square will always be accessible to pedestrians.
To allow the work to be done within the shopping centre, a portion of Town Square that has already been closed to the public for some time will also be screened off. The Town Square parking lot will still be accessible, and regular business hours will be maintained.

The redevelopment at Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre
Oldham Council leader Cllr. Amanda Chadderton stated: “We’ve been working on the preparation for a few weeks, but now the transformation truly starts. This is a significant project milestone, and you will soon start to notice many changes as we reconfigure the structure for the future.
“Throughout the redevelopment, the centre stays open as usual, and we will minimize interruption. You will be able to experience a significantly better venue after it is finished,” she continued, “which will include a new market and food hall, new event space, co-working area, and heritage archive.”
Work will continue to support the development of the new offices and co-working space on the upper mall of Spindles. This is in addition to the projects underway in Town Square and Parliament Square. A site will need to be built up on George Square in the middle of August to enable for the installation of new windows in the workstations and other significant improvements needed to renovate the structure. In this region, an alternative pedestrian entrance will be built. The redevelopment of Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre is expected to be finished in 2024.
