A South Congress H-E-B store in Austin has been scheduled for demolition and will be rebuilt from the scratch, over a two year period. The 60 year old store which has been in existence since 1957 will undergo a complete overhaul for the first time since it was built. This project has been in the works for a while and H-E-B LP made their plans public in 2019. The grocer initially planned to begin construction by late 2020, but unfortunately Covid-19 pandemic slowed down the entire process.

The rebuilding of this 69,000 square feet South Congress H-E-B store, located at 2400 South Congress Avenue is expected to start early next year, not too long after its demolition which has been set for February 2022. Major upgrades and modifications will be implemented to transform the  oldest, long-standing H-E-B store in Austin, into an iconic location. The new HEB store, upon completion will be over 145,000 square feet and rise upto 3 stories. Plans call for the inclusion of indoor and outdoor seating arrangements for dining and live entertainment, along with a True Texas BBQ restaurant. Several environmental features such as rooftop solar panels, smart lighting and abundant natural lighting are also inclusive in the project’s design.

South Congress H-E-B store project also includes temporary store

A week before the construction start date of the South Congress H-E-B store, a temporary H-E-B store will be opened adjacent to the Twin Oaks Shopping Center. This temporary H-E-B store  is intended to serve customers throughout the construction period at the South Congress location. According to the HEB officials, the temporary store will still offer many of the same quality products and convenient services, which also include Home Delivery and H-E-B Pharmacy services.  One of the exceptions is the curbside pickup service which will not be available at the temporary store, but the service will still be accessible to area customers from the nearby Riverside H-E-B plus! store.

The H-E-B Group Vice President of Central Texas, Cathy Harm, mentioned that the South Congress H-E-B store had become an important part of the neighborhood over the years. Harm also said that he hopes the store’s new design would show H-E-B’s deep gratitude to all loyal customers who supported their brand for over 60 years.
