There have been plans unveiled for a significant revitalization project in York dubbed Coney Street Riverside. It will add new leisure, commercial, and residential space and promote job growth.

Coney Street Riverside project is Helmsley Group‘s latest project. Helmsley Group is a real estate investor and developer that has been active in the city for more than 40 years. The investor has already brought forward a number of projects. These include Merchant’s Exchange, the Old Fire Station, and Westgate along York’s riverfront.

The development consists of units 1–7, 19–33, and 39–43 Coney Street. Thus, it aspires to build on the street’s long history as a lively center of community, commerce, and culture. Furthermore, it will be opening it up and re-establishing a connection. This is between this part of the city and the River Ouse.

Proposals include a riverside walkway and the establishment of a sizeable green and accessible public realm. Both are on the waterfront itself and through the creation of new access routes between Coney Street and the riverfront. The plans also call for the construction of 250,000 square feet of mixed-use retail, leisure, commercial, and residential space.

Development of new jobs in the city

The plan will involve new construction components to create more student housing. This is in addition to converting previously underutilized unoccupied upper levels for residential and commercial usage.

The program’s advantages are anticipated to include the development of new jobs in the city, further investment in the tourism and leisure industries, and greater foot traffic in stores. The program is built around three pillars of economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Key city stakeholders have contributed to the collaborative development of the master plan so far. Beginning on September 12, proposals will be on display for public comment at 29-31 Coney Street, the location of the University of York’s Street Life initiative.

“Our Coney Street Riverside designs are the conclusion of a systematic program of site assembly over the previous three years,” stated Max Reeves, development director at Helmsley Group. We are now prepared to present our idea for transforming this ancient road into the city’s social center. This is in a way that respects and protects the area’s rich history and tradition while also offering new public space.
