The Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing led by Minister Babatunde Fashola has launched an online portal (https://nhp.worksandhousing.gov.ng) for the sale of houses developed under the Nigeria National Housing Programme (NHP) in 34 states of the West African country.

Owing to the portal, Nigerians now stand a chance to apply online to buy the available 5,000 plus housing units, ranging from 1, 2 to 3 bedroom bungalows and blocks of flats. According to Mr. Fashola, the decision by the ministry to sell the available houses online was to bring credibility to the exercise and reduce human intervention as well as give all categories of buyers a level playing field.

Purpose of the Nigeria National Housing Programme pilot project

On the sidelines of the launch of the portal for the sale of houses developed under the Nigeria National Housing Programme, the Federal Minister of Works and Housing explained that that the program was not just meant to build houses but also to test what sort of houses Nigerians would like to live in so as to make policies to guide its agencies and parastatals such as the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) and so on, as well as other stakeholders, to build what could be acceptable in the markets.

“We discovered that in the Northern part of the country there was a preference for bungalows and a large expanse of land that encouraged building horizontally while in the Southern part there seemed to be acceptance for blocks of flats and lack of space that made building vertically necessary,” explained the minister.

The program, according to Fashola, was also meant to galvanize private sector participation and fulfill part of the objectives of the administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).
