President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently opened the modern residential complex for Court of Appeal judges in Kumasi. In April last year, the President, assisted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Chief Justice Annin Yeboah, cut the sod to officially kick off the project.

The development is a gated community with 20 four-bedroom apartment units spread across a seven-acre plot of land. Amenities include a tennis court, a swimming pool, guest quarters, and a guest house. A parking lot for the directors and other administrative support employees of the court service was also officially opened. As well as six units of three-bedroom residences with boys’ quarters.

Court of Appeal judges located in Kumasi who are assigned to hear cases in the north of Ghana will have permanent apartments in the complex. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Justice Anin Yeboah, and Members of Parliament were all there to grace the ceremony.

Funding for the construction of the residential complex for appeal court judges in Kumasi

The project was sponsored by the Ministry of Local Government Decentralisation and Rural Development, through the District Assembly Common Fund. The President believed that having the facility would encourage the judiciary to work more to advance the nation’s judicial system.

He assured the public that the government would support the judiciary in all of its endeavors. He said, “Government will continue to implement policies to advance the rule of law, and, thereby, reinforcing the people’s confidence. As well as shore up our nation’s reputation as a country governed by the rule of law.”

The President commended the Asantehene and the entire Asanteman for releasing a seven-acre parcel of land for the modern residential complex.

Justice Yeboah recalled the Court of Appeal facility built in 2008 after being started by President J.A. Kufuor’s government. However, since the judges couldn’t live there permanently, they typically commuted from Accra and Kumasi to hear cases. This was a hassle because all appellate cases had to be handled in Accra.

He discussed improving the judiciary’s human resources and pleaded with the government to provide funding. So that some workers might be hired to ensure the upkeep of the courts and other facilities.
