The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction(Saisc) is currently calling for entries into the 36th annual Steel Awards scheduled to take place on September 13 in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape concurrently.

The confirmed categories for this year include the overall winner, tubular, light steel framing, factory and warehouse as well as the metal cladding category.

A requirement for the entries is an illustration of what can be achieved using steel as well as its importance as a structural component. The judging panel will also put into consideration factors such as the benefits achieved by using steel construction.

They will look at aesthetic appeal, environmental considerations, innovation in design, fabrication or construction. The technical prowess, engineering expertise and quality of workmanship are also determinants.

The steelwork must have been completed in the last year and have been contracted by locally. The entrants must also have acquired permission from either the developers or the clients for the projects to be entered into the awards.

For projects of 10t or less, an entry fee of $70.3 is required, whereas larger projects of more than 10t are to pay a fixed fee of $273.6, inclusive of one complementary seat at the Steel Awards dinner at the venue of the participant’s choice. This is only in condition that there will be a booking of more than one seat.
The deadline for fee payment is March 31.

The entrants are also required by Saisc, with each entry form of between 500-800 words, to include a motivation. This will be accompanied by a short description of the project as well as structural framing. It should also take account of the project’s uniqueness, its green building rating, challenges and solutions, cost-saving solutions as well as the client’s testimony.

Saisc also stresses the importance of the inclusion of high resolution digital images from all angles submitted with the entry form as the judging panel will consider first impression with their finalist decisions.

The deadline for entry in Friday, March 31.
