According to media sources, India’s Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) would add 93km to its 118.9km Phase II project. The project aims to link the metro rail to Parandur in response to a plan to construct a greenfield airport nearby. Three corridors will be included of the $7.7 billion (Rs618.43 billion) Phase II original design.

While Corridor 3 runs for 45.8 km between Madhavaram and Siruseri line, Corridor 4 runs for 26.1 km between Lighthouse and Poonamallee. Furthermore, Corridor 5 runs for 47 km between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. The most recent plan calls for the extension of Corridor 3 from Siruseri to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. This will be through Kelambakkam (26 km). Others include Corridor 4 to connect Parandur (50 km), and Corridor 5 to Avadi through Thirumangalam and Mogappair (an additional 17 km).

Evaluation of Chennai Metro Rail project Phase II

The government will shortly hire a consultant to evaluate the proposal’s viability and deliver a report with recommendations. A number of factors will be assessed in this research. These include such as project costs, congestion levels, peak hours. Furthermore, it will include travel demand in the three corridors over the next 30 years. The prolonged project will require public and private finance, and social and environmental implications will also be evaluated.

“We just launched a request for a proposal to choose a consultant for these corridors,” an official stated. The consultant will review all of the current reports, including the development plans, comprehensive mobility strategy, and current transportation routes. In a few months, the consultant will return to us with a report.

According to sources, the corridor running until Parandur is anticipated to have fewer stations. However, if demand increases, more stations may be added. In May of this year, Package C3 (CP08 EV01) of the Phase II project for CMRL was awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
