SKC Group, one of the largest conglomerates in South Korea will soon build a $473 million SKC Manufacturing plant, at its Covington site in Newton County. This plant is going to be the company’s third major investment in Georgia and it is intended for producing a substrate made from glass; which is used in making semiconductor chips for smartphones, automobiles, and other products in the electronic industry.

The SKC Manufacturing plant in Georgia will be built at 3000 SKC Drive North of Interstate 20 in Covington, on an already existing property owned by the company. With production targeted at the beginning of the summer of 2023, the company plans to hire mostly technicians and engineers who are experts in the field of semiconductors and this will result in the  creation of about 400 new jobs in Newton County.

SKC glass-based semiconductor solutions

Sung Jin Kim, SKC director of New Business Development and co-developer of the glass substrate technology, shed more light on the production plans for the SKC Manufacturing plant.  Kim explained that their glass-based semiconductor solutions, were greatly inspired by the initial scientific research outcomes at Georgia Tech Packaging Research Center. He  pointed out that this new technology would play a major role in ensuring  utmost performance with minimal power consumptions for high-performance computing, as well as for high-speed communication applications. Kim also said, “Georgia will be a basecamp for SKC’s AI and high-speed data center semiconductor applications.”

SKC Inc is working in collaboration with the state of Atlanta and the company has  already signed a ceremonial memorandum of understanding with the state, to solidify the the development of this SKC Manufacturing plant and its location. According to the chairman of the Newton County Industrial Development Authority, Lanier Sims, the SKC company has been an integral part of the business in Newton County, since the inception of their headquarters in 1996. Sim also mentioned that SKC is a key community partner and the Industrial Development Authority was grateful for their continued investment and commitment to the region. He also added, “we believe this is a continuation of strong partnership and perseverance together.”
